Transition Program

If needed, single mothers who are completing the Parenting Program can apply to spend an additional year in Casa Teresa’s Transition Program.  The Transition Program was started in the fall of 2003 to offer those single mothers who need additional program time a chance to stabilize their lives.  Most Casa Teresa residents have suffered through years of poverty, abuse, and addiction and many have been raised in foster care.  They often need an extended program in order to attain self-sufficiency.

A mother may apply to move into the Transition Program when her infant is two months old.  This program focuses on preparing the young mothers to become ready to support themselves and their babies within one year.  Our Case Managers work intensively with the residents to prepare them for independent living.  During this time, residents must be attending school or job training full-time or have a job that pays a living wage. In addition, residents work to clear up past legal problems, address addiction issues, find reliable daycare, and establish attainable goals.  This phase in the Casa Teresa Program allows young mothers to make healthy steps toward independence, while being provided with a safety net of a healthy living environment and ongoing support.

The Transition Program facility, “Transition I” is located right next door to the main Parenting Program facility and houses 6 women and their babies. In October of 2006, we opened a 6-unit apartment complex next door to Transition I.  This new facility “Transition II,” now accommodates 6 additional working, single mothers and their babies.  These mothers are well on their way to independence and success.

Transition Program 2007-2008 Objectives

  • To provide shelter for 12 single mothers and their babies.
  • For each of these residents to retain their job that pays a living wage for one year.
  • For infants to remain in stable and developmentally appropriate infant care while their mothers are at work.
  • For each of these residents to obtain affordable housing.
